Recently we talked about “7 Foods That Help Boost Metabolism”. When added to a healthy diet, these foods can help jump start the body’s energy and fat burning processes. But besides diet, there are other factors that can influence the body’s metabolic rate.
Let’s jump right in to 5 ways to boost metabolism!
Get enough water
This is crucial, because the body needs to be hydrated to effectively burn energy. Increasing fluid intake can help the body more easily break down fat, while dehydration can slow down metabolism. Drinking even as little as 17oz of water increases metabolic rate by 30 percent in healthy men and women. The boost generally occurs within 10 minutes, but reaches a maximum around 30-40 minutes after drinking. In general, drinking ½ of one’s body weight in ounces of water per day is a good amount to aim for. So if one weighs 150 lbs., that would be around 75 ounces of water per day.
Get enough sunlight
Sunlight can help boost metabolism because it helps regulate the body’s internal clock. Exposure to sunlight helps tell the body it’s daytime, which triggers a compound called nitric oxide to be released in the bloodstream and results in a boost in metabolism.
Just 10 minutes of direct sun exposure a day is enough to experience the benefits!
Get enough sleep
The body and mind need sleep in order to properly repair and recharge. During sleep, the body monitors the levels of two hormones, leptin and ghrelin, which control feelings of hunger and fullness. Maintaining normal levels of hunger and fullness is directly linked to metabolic rate. Chronic lack of sleep can slow down metabolism, so it’s recommended to get 7-8 hours per night.
Decrease stress levels
Stress can actually lower metabolism because it puts the body in a defensive, energy conserving mode. Choosing an activity that lowers stress, like meditation or yoga can be helpful to increase metabolism.
Not only does exercise reduce stress, it is almost a surefire way to boost metabolism. Exercising boosts energy levels and speeds up calorie and fat burning in the body, and the effects of a vigorous workout can last for hours afterwards. Additionally, strengthening exercises help build muscle tone, which means the body will naturally burn more calories throughout the day, even at rest.
Following these guidelines can help give the body what it needs to have a healthy metabolism and speed up weight loss.
