An incision is made in the side or front of the hip, and the hip socket is exposed by moving surrounding muscles away. The head and neck of the femur (the thigh bone) are removed and the prosthetic femoral head is insterted into the hollow channel in the femur. This is then put back into the hip socket and the surrounding tissues are moved back to their original positions.
